The coffee market is experiencing one of the most challenging periods in its history.
Arabica prices have surpassed $4.30 per pound, a level not seen in over 50 years. This surge, the highest in decades, is putting a strain on the entire supply chain, from producers to roasters, all the way to consumers.
Several factors have contributed to this crisis.
First, crops in Brazil and Vietnam, the world's two largest producers, have been compromised by extreme weather events and difficulties logistic-wise. Second, global coffee stocks are at historic lows, creating a scarcity that drives prices up. Finally, geopolitical uncertainties and tariff tensions add further instability to an already fragile market.
For us roasters, this translates, from one side, into a surge in raw material purchase costs and a compression of margins, from the other side, into a need/commitment to maintain quality and sustainability.
But what does all this mean?
It means that the sector is under pressure and the value of every cup we drink has never been so important.
Behind every sip there are people, farmers and companies like us, who work every day to ensure a quality product, despite the difficulties.
What can we do?
As a roastery, we believe it is time to raise awareness among consumers and the entire sector: coffee today cannot be considered just a commodity. It is a valuable product, the result of hard work, expertise and passion throughout the supply chain.
Now more than ever, awareness and respect for the work behind every bean is needed.
